This first two sentences couldn't have been more true about me becoming a web designer. "Many web designers, myself included, come to the web with a background in the graphic arts. We think in pictures, not in code." I started with an interest in graphic design and that developed into an interest in web designing. Cook goes on to say that you need to diversify your approach to design problems, becoming equal parts writer, engineer, and artist. I myself consider myself 2.5/4 regarding that. I believe I have a good look upon design problems, a good writer, and am pretty artsy. The engineering part, which I associate to the coding, will be the most difficult part.
So onto the nitty gritty. CSS and HTML. What is the difference is what I have been asking myself. The article explains it saying "HTML is used to structure content. CSS is for formatting structured content." Which doesn't really make too great of a distinction to me but I see it as more of a flow. You can't have CSS without having HTML first. The code given to you to play with actually helped me out a lot as well. It is very little but that is where I need to start, which makes me more comfortable with my non-existent programming background.
