Groking: the Artist, the Writer, and the Engineer

Web design - like almost everything else - is a process that starts from the bottom up. The groking article made me think of designing a website sort of like building a house. A solid foundation that makes sense for what will be built on top of it is needed before the more detail and aesthetic qualities can be incorporated. I like the idea of understanding that content and code matter just as much as design. This really would make someone a better designer because you can really only create a truly "good" website if all of the parts (content, structure, appearance) work together to paint a complete picture.

As the CSS article mentioned, I was one of those who didn't know what in the world wide web CSS meant, let alone how or why it was different from HTML. I think this sums it up nicely: "HTML is used to structure content. CSS is used for formatting structured content." So what I'm getting is that CSS is used to offer more control over what goes into the HTML framework. It was nice to get a little taste of some basic HTML tags - it definitely makes me feel a little more confident moving forward. I guess HTML really does have a rhyme and reason rather than being a lot of random letters, numbers, and symbols! Who knew? (Just kidding...mostly).
