DESIGN IS IMPORTANT! I love these articles discussing design. These articles give me the kind of information that I enjoy reading and can easily apply when trying to construct a website. I know that programming is an extremely important part of web design that I need to practice but I can't help getting excited about the design elements.
Reading these kinds of articles remind me of working with a programming class a couple semesters ago. While me (and other STC students) mostly worrying about design and a clean user interface, the programmers just focused on the pure mechanics of the programs. This wouldn't have been a problem except the programmers refused to take any advice as far as design and usability. They would say that the design and the usability were almost luxury aspects that weren't "needed". However, these articles discuss in a clear format the importance of interface design. How the programming and the design must work together to create a successful site. Without things like clear navigation, orientation, planning and much more the users of the website will get confused/bored/frustrated (you get it) and move on.
Overall (I know I say this all the time) these articles are great resources when looking for general cookie cutter rules that work with webdesign, from people that know what success in webdesign is!
I'm quite sure I'm experiencing what you went through a couple semesters ago, at this very moment. The programmers are all about the mechanics and completely NOT about the design. I'm also in the same boat as you when it comes to being excited about design, and not about the coding- if only web design didn't include the coding part.
